this was the beginning of the rutabega as a concept/thing/band. i had been playing in Space & Noise Productions - a noisy Midwestern 5 piece rock machine - and these strange songs started coming out. they didn't seem to fit what we were doing at S&N inc. i started recording on a borrowed 4 track cassette recorder. then the songs started coming true. after a bit, i had a little dysfunctional family of songs. they made me feel sick, but i liked it. i sent them to Marc at Johann's Face and he said he would like to put out an album. mister Morgan helped me wrap it up.

i sometimes think of this as my divorce album. listening to it now is tough. i still like to play a couple of these songs. 'imaginary friend' is one of my favorite recordings i've ever done.

it's kind of a mess, but it's my mess.

ps: my dad used to call me 'the rutabega' when i was a kid. not sure why.
pps: i didn't realize i had misspelled 'the rutabega' till after we had 1,000 CDs sitting in my living room. you would have thought i would have googled it... they had Google back then, right?
